Each week The Autism Society recognizes a particular Affiliate that has done great work in promoting our mission of improving the lives of all affected by autism. This week, we would like to recognize The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin for the incredible work they do!
The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin has been serving the greater Milwaukee area since 1976. They offer a help line, several face to face support groups, monthly social events for families, and a social group for adults on the spectrum meets twice a month.
They have educational workshops for parents and professionals throughout the year. One new initiative that they are excited about is their collaboration with First Stage, the Milwaukee children’s theater company. They co-sponsor several sensory friendly performances of live theater, and in 2017, there will be the premier of a new play, “Mockingbird,” based on the book by Katherine Erskine, which features a protagonist with Asperger Syndrome. They will be collaborating with First Stage staff to provide a teacher’s guide for the hundreds of students who will view the play with their classes, and facilitate discussion after 40 performances.
Additionally, with the 2017 Autism Society National Conference being hosted in Milwaukee, The Autism Society of Southeastern Wisconsin will be playing a vital role in planning and implementation. To submit a paper for the conference, click here: https://asa.confex.com/asa/2017/cfp.cgi
