Autism and the Environment 101: Online Course 3
A new model of autism is emerging that is more inclusive and can take account of these considerations. It includes what was in the old model but adds some critical further dimensions:
- Genes but ALSO environment
- Brain but ALSO body and whole system
- While autism looks fixed, static and incurable, it actually has many dynamic features that change greatly, some of which can be improved with treatment.
- Some of the treatable features of autism are hidden in the body’s metabolism, which may have been injured by environment and not just by genes, and need to be looked for by physicians who understand how environmental exposures cause harm.
