Spotlight on Services: Autism Society Affiliates Engage Communities Across the United States during April!

During April 2014, over 60 Autism Society affiliates nationwide engaged with their communities to start a simple conversation with tremendous potential outcomes: how do we create “A Better World for Autism”? Affiliates from Alaska to New York, California to Florida, Texas to Minnesota held events, activities, seminars, walks and other outreach events to engage with individuals with ASD, families, as well as the community at large. The Autism Society offered affiliates and other collaborators interested in joining National Autism Awareness Month (NAAM) toolkits and fact sheets, online engagement activities such as the #selfies4autism photo drive, “Autism is..” video log and image prompt (stay tuned for the final product!) and twitter chats that were widely used in April and share with communities across the country. Over 10 million individuals saw the hashtag #NAAM2014 or #selfies4autism, thousands posted pictures across social networks showing their solidarity and conversations began in homes across the country about what actions can be taken to create “A Better World for Autism.”

We couldn’t have made this month a success without you! Please keep sharing your #selfies4autism with us and event images and stories on our Facebook page or post to our Pinterest boards. We look forward to continuing to explore with our communities, neighbors and friends how we can all work together to make a better world for autism.
