The Importance of Public Participation in Government Committees

The Autism Society encourages public participation in government that reflects a variety of individual voices to best serve its constituents. The role of a government committee, like any committee, is to listen to all voices, both popular and unpopular, and reach a consensus that suits all members. The Autism Society feels strongly that government committees must also include self-advocates to ensure that all voices are being heard as Washington considers ways to best serve all affected by autism and other disabilities.
The Autism Society congratulates Peter Bell of Autism Speaks on his appointment to the President’s Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities. As a parent of a son with autism, he is in a great position to add to the national dialogue around autism.
