The Affordable Care Act and Answers

With the Affordable Care Act (ACA) coming into effect, many have questions and concerns. For those who are uninsured, they must obtain health insurance by 2014 or they will have to pay a fine. In 2014, the penalty is 1 percent of an individual’s yearly income or $95 for the year, whichever is greater. The penalty increases each year. Individuals can search for their health insurance options using the Health Insurance Marketplace that is available in every state online, over the phone, or in-person. Besides learning what the options are, individuals can find out if they are eligible for financial assistance or coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Plan. Financial assistance is available based on annual income. The Marketplace is primarily an option for those uninsured or those who want to buy health insurance.
If individuals already have insurance through their job, Medicare, Medicaid, TRICARE, or veteran’s coverage, a majority will be able to keep that insurance. There will be a few new benefits such as: insurers can no longer put a dollar cap on how much they will pay for care or deny coverage because of a preexisting condition. But just like those uninsured, those already insured have the opportunity to search for other options in the Health Insurance Marketplace. Individuals may find that they want to purchase a “child-only” policy and or that their existing does not provide them with as much coverage, such as for applied behavior analysis (ABA) or coverage for Autism treatment; 26 states and the District of Columbia have ABA coverage and 27 states offer Autism treatment coverage available through the marketplace. Everyone should think carefully and fully consider the costs and benefits before switching from their current health insurance.
