The political spectrum in the United States today directly impacts the autism spectrum, from educational policies to federal funding for key disability programs to Medicaid reform, meaningful insurance reform and other policy initiatives. Autism Society Applauds New Legislation to Prevent Restraint and Seclusion in Schools
U.S. Representatives George Miller (D-CA) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) introduced the Preventing Harmful Restraint and Seclusion in Schools Act (H.R. 4247) December 9, which would for the first time protect children from restraint or seclusion in schools. Fiscal Year 2010 Appropriations
On December 14, the U.S. Senate passed the FY 2010 Omnibus Appropriations bill by a vote of 57-35. This action followed a vote of 60-34 on Saturday, December 12, to end debate on the bill. The House of Representatives passed the bill on December 10 by a vote of 221-202. The House and Senate votes clear the measure to be signed by President Obama. On December 8, the Ohio House passed HB 8 - Autism Insurance Coverage. The bill will cover Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and other medically necessary treatments prescribed by an insured's treating physician or psychologist. Read more …
Sights and Sounds of Emotion Trigger Big Brain Responses
Researchers at the University of York in the U.K. have identified a part of the brain that responds to both facial and vocal expressions of emotion. The scientists believe that the finding could help in the study of autism and other neuro-developmental disorders in which face perception challenges occur. Read more …
Children with Autism Show Slower Pupil Responses, MU Study Finds
In a new study, University of Missouri scientists found that children with autism have slower pupil responses to light change. The researchers have developed a pupil response test that has been 92.5 percent accurate in identifying children with autism. Read more …
