I'm on the spectrum
For many years I struggled in the world of "not knowing." It was a dark place where all my best efforts were met with repeated failure. Finally, while researching for my son after his diagnosis, I found the term "Asperger's Syndrome." I explored two of my favorite "expressions" of autism through the books of Liane Holliday Willey and my personal/professional friendship with Stephen Shore. There, gently woven somewhere in between, I found myself—my authentic identity. With the diagnosis, I left behind the pharmaceutical incarceration that had been the result of years of mental health misdiagnoses. I began making knowledgeable choices about my life and career. As any successful individual with a disability, I stopped denying and pretending, and started adapting and adjusting. As a result, while still a work-in-progress, I am closer to the whole, complete individual I know I can be, not in spite of my autism, but by completely embracing it.
