Thursday, October 22, 2009
By: Autism Society of Northwest Ohio
Presented by Autism Society of Northwest Ohio
Back for the fifth year, this series of workshops is designed to teach strategies to cope with some of the difficult issues faced by people of any age with autism. The Autism Society of Northwest Ohio will provide an opportunity for people in Northwest Ohio to see nationally known, published authors, researchers and experts in the autism field. Fees are $10 for parents and family members, and $15 for professionals. Scholarships are available for family members if $10 is a hardship. Certificates of Attendance are provided and teachers can use the sessions as training for their professional development plans.
The workshops are scheduled for 2 1/2 hours on a Wednesday evening from 6:30-9 p.m. and are repeated the following Thursday morning from 9:30 a.m.-noon to accommodate differing schedules. Pre-registration is required. Download the registration form from www.asno.org, where you can also find descriptions of all three workshops offered this fall.
Workshop #1, “Tackling the Uncomfortable: Teaching Sexuality and Relationships to Adolescents on the Autism Spectrum,” will be held October 28 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus, Health Education Building, Room 105; and October 29 from 9:30 a.m.–12 p.m. at the University of Toledo Health Science Campus, Dowling Hall, Room 2315. The speaker is Melissa Dubie of the Indiana Resource Center for Autism (IRCA), Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, located at Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind. This workshop will provide practical information for tackling the physical and physiological changes teens across the autism spectrum experience. Learn how to use and apply strategies (e.g., visual supports, social narratives, videos) you already know work with your adolescent to teach them about their bodies as they are changing through the cycle of puberty. Specific topics include: hygiene, menstruation, private/public, erections, masturbation, and private compared to public. The speaker will address the needs of adolescents at both ends of the spectrum.
